Waves. An electrical current. Just like the one that destroyed Bud Powell's brain and nearly did the same to Thelonious Monk. They may have become Jazz legends but let's not forget that they suffered quite a different treat in their lifetime: police harassment, banned from playing, prison terms, electroshocks, psychic therapy, downers, psychoactive drugs...As if their difference had been a crime. Described as an 'impressionist audiovisual' work, "Waves" is a new kind of critical work whose composer is from a generation who tried many kinds of re-readings. Cofounder of the Anti-Pop Consortium, HPrizm has shared his science of 'SoundDesign' with The Roots, Mos Def, Matthew Shipp, Radiohead and David Lynch. No one like him can use hi-tech resources to tell the dark sides of History, writing a piece ready for building and deconstruction by highly skilled architects of improvisations such as Wadada Leo Smith, Steve Lehman and David Virelles.

The first decade of the Civil Rights Movement (1954-1964) stroke a chord with many musicians: Max Roach ("We Insist: Freedom Now!"), Randy Weston ("Uhuru Africa"), Oliver Nelson ("Afro-American Sketches)", Charles Mingus, who wrote many statements, and all the early free jazzmen.

It took Wadada Leo Smith, a major witness of this moment of History, three other decades to compose a cycle of twenty-one pieces. It took him all necessary hindsight, memory, and the imagination that goes with it, to transcribe his yearning for change. It took him a musical questioning on the violent transformations this violent society calls for; a musical questioning on the many sides and edges of our human condition, to make it consistent. It took the videasts a talent for handling forms and contents of archival material, and a talent for live interaction to be in synch with the composer's creativity. Since it was premiered in October 2011 in Los Angeles, "Ten Freedom Summers" questions and amazes the living Jazz scene. Because it has entered History.
