BORN IN FLAMES
These three female urban warriors love nothing more than mixing elements : Tamar-kali’s afro-punk answers Jean Grae (aka Phenix of the X-Men) and Invincible’s funk-rap. Tamar-kali is the “hardcore-soul queen” from Brooklyn and she speaks only about love and revolution in ecstatic vocal assaults. Invincible is known in Detroit as the pasionaria of social justice, especially with the help of Anomolies, a hip-hop action group using quotes and samples from interviews of the men in the street. Jean Grae was born in Cape Town of such legends as piano player Abdullah Ibrahim and singer Sathima Bea Benjamin. But her alias was chosen to rise from the ashes and shout it out loud? Together they form an alliance, a reference to the movie ? Born in Flames ? (a Sci-Fi drifting between classes, races and genders), ready to use any kind of music to foil all pressure against women in general and especially black, homosexual, and other freaks in the society of spectacle. Many burning issues for a flammable trio.
