This show gives the lion's share to Emory Douglas, cartoonist and graphic designer for The Black Panther weekly. Mixing cartoons, collages and appropriations, this committed artist tells the epic of the Black Panther Party of which he was the Minister of Culture. There is immediacy in the beauty of his pictures that, although firmly rooted in past political fights, shows a still up to date aesthetics of energy. The teaming of Living Colour with the Last Poets offers a fantastic artistic moment thanks also to David Murray compositions. It could be said that this show mixing plastic arts, jazz, rock and spoken words, is a kind of kaleidoscopic representation of today's Afro-American art expression.
Mixing funk and heavy metal, Living Colour creates a powerful yet original sound and do not hesitate to tackle serious matters in their songs, such as racism or politics while referring to Jimi Hendrix' electric eruptions, Funkadelic and Bad Brains.
No wonder they team with the Last Poets, Umar Bin Hassan and Abiodun Oyewole, masters of the spoken-word, whose influence was deciding over the emerging hip-hop scene. In the line of civil rights and social freedom fighters, the Last Poets were formed on the 19th of May 1968, anniversary of Malcolm X. For this Tongues on fire, they have written original and sharp texts.
