Trois nations et un territoire sont réunis pour cette soirée, trois entités qui ont irrigué le jazz puis le free jazz et depuis le renouveau de la conscience politique de cette musique. En Guadeloupe, le syncrétisme est bouillonnant. Le jazz, musique créole, débarque et fait face à la vivacité revendiquée des formes traditionnelles, notamment le Gwo-Ka. Né à Pointe-à-Pitre, Christian Laviso recopie d’abord les chants traditionnels, croise la conscience de Napoléon Magloire et Guy Conquet, impose la guitare dans le monde des veillées des maîtres de Ka. Du bœuf au choc préliminaire avec les standards modernes de l’improvisation. Les rencontres avec David Murray, Phaorah Sanders et Kenny Garrett ne feront que renforcer l’esprit libre d’un musicien jamais enfermé dans son insularité.
ENGLISH VERSION : Three nations and a territory have come together just for tonight, three entities which have irrigated jazz and free jazz, and sustained the renewed political consciousness which has always characterized the genre. In Guadeloupe, syncretism is the rule of the land. Jazz, a Creole music, comes barging in and meets the unapologetic energy of traditional forms such as Gwo-Ka. Pointe-à-Pitre native Christian Laviso has initially copied traditional singing, and taken Napoléon Magloire and Guy Conquet along for the ride. He’s now made room for his guitar in the world of the evening gatherings of the Ka masters, jamming away into a headlong collision with the modern standards of improvisation. His encounters with David Murray, Pharoah Sanders, and Kenny Garrett have further emboldened the free-spirited musician who was never to remain insular.

Le Jazz confronté à ses héritages, versant Afrique de l’Ouest. Décolonisation des pays, puis créolisation des esprits. Le continent africain bruisse des racines de la musique populaire africaine-américaine, ancienne et actuelle. Ce sont ces bruissements qui sont au cœur du 368 Degrés, où le jazz danse avec ses cousins, le groove et les sonorités traditionnelles. Trio all-stars fascinant sur le papier comme sur scène, par ses racines, là aussi, justement. Racines maliennes, sénégalaises et ivoiriennes. Mélange sensible de trois musiciens emblématiques d’une scène contemporaine d’Afrique de l’Ouest en perpétuelle ébullition, trois musiciens de renommée aussi large que leur parcours est riche, tracés par les rencontres avec, notamment Joe Zawinul, fondateur de Weather Report.
ENGLISH VERSION : Jazz and its Western African legacy. Political decolonization, spiritual creolization. The roots of African-American popular music, past and present, are scattered all over African continent. They appear in hums and whispers in 368 Degrés, which has jazz dancing with its cousins, groove and traditional sounds. A fascinating all-star trio in theory, but also in practice – on stage. These three musicians have Malian, Senegalese and Ivorian roots and they all represent the contemporary Western African scene, which is constantly reinventing itself; they deserve every bit of the renown they’ve earned, notably through their collaboration with Joe Zawinul, founder of the Weather Report.
