Famoudou Don Moye est batteur, percussionniste de L’Art Ensemble of Chicago depuis 1969. Connaisseur pointu des rythmes du monde, chercheur inlassable greffant l’Afrique de l’Ouest aux Caraïbes, le Blues au Gnawa, Famoudou Don Moye reste engagé dans la poursuite tenace d’une musique joueuse et très très libre. On y entend les réminiscences de l’AACM et l’actualité brûlante de la Great Black Music aux Etats-Unis. On y écoute une spiritualité à toute épreuve, renforcée pour ce concert par le pianiste Kirk Lightsey – ancien compagnon de route de Dexter Gordon, Pharoah Sanders ou Chet Baker – du contrebassiste Sylvain Romano, et du trompettiste Christophe Leloil.
ENGLISH VERSION : Famoudou Don Moye drives the drums and percussions of the Art Ensemble of Chicago since 1969. A keen connoisseur of world rhythms, a tireless researcher grafting West Africa to the Caribbean, the Blues to Gnawa, Famoudou Don Moye remains committed to the tenacious pursuit of a playful and very very free music. We hear the reminiscences of the AACM and the burning news of Great Black Music in the United States. We listen to an unfailing spirituality, reinforced for this concert by pianist Kirk Lightsey – former traveling companion of Dexter Gordon, Pharoah Sanders or Chet Baker – double bassist Sylvain Romano, and trumpeter Christophe Leloil.

En initiant ce nouveau sextet franco-américain, Émile Parisien détourne ses propres sentiers battus. Ici le saxophoniste fait coup double. Lead frenchy et rythmique américaine au sein d’un combo électrique, organique et terriblement excitant. On retrouve des habitués du ‘son Parisien’, Manu Codjia, guitariste d’une sincérité désarmante et Roberto Negro, pianiste pointilliste et pointilleux. En face, la rythmique où s’ébattent Joe Martin et Nasheet Waits et la trompette de Theo Croker. Sextet inédit et appétant, dont la musique s’inspire d’une figure majeure de l’art contemporain, Louise Bourgeois, et tout particulièrement de sa spectaculaire sculpture d’araignée symbolisant la maternité.

ENGLISH VERSION : When he started this new French-American sextet, Emile Parisien came off his beaten track. The saxophonist kills two birds with one stone. A French leader meets an American rhythm section within an electric and organic combo which sounds and feels exciting as hell. He’s gathered up the usual suspects: Manu Codjia, a disarmingly sincere guitar player, and Roberto Negro, a pointillistic and wonderfully pernickety pianist. Rhythmically, Joe Martin and Nasheet Waits have tremendous fun, while Theo Croker seems to be having the time of his life on the trumpet. This altogether novel sextet is wonderfully intriguing – it was placed under the patronage of Louise Bourgeois, a great contemporary artist best known for her spectacular sculptures of spiders symbolizing motherhood.

Photographe de jazz, Jacques Bisceglia (1940-2013), est un homme qui possède un œil unique. Un œil en or. Le genre de regard a écrit sa propre Légende dorée du jazz. Parmi les mille réussites photographiques qui documentent cette Légende, il y a l’apogée du Free, Alger, l’Afrique, Alger et l’Afrique, leurs urgences, Don Cherry et le Dieu Ra, un bord de zinc avec Sunny Murray. Jacques Bisceglia est focus tout entier dans la demi-seconde où il déclenche. Réglant au feeling, et en un seul clic, ses images pour très longtemps.
