ENGLISH VERSION : In spite of all the reasons to be angry in this world of ours, Naïssam Jalal has chosen not to seethe, but to soothe. The flute player, composer and singer has relentlessly created music which taps into her instinctive strength. Healing Rituals could be considered as a formal climax – the quintessence of what the musician has been after. Her whispered art is a true ritual, drawing inspiration from traditional cultures and customs, especially the way they have been used throughout life to soothe and heal. The invisible realm is a recurring theme of Naïssam Jalal’s art, and one for which she was crowned in 2019 at the Victoires du Jazz. Her own reconnexion with the spiritual world lies at the root of these Healing Rituals, which bring together Egyptian, Moroccan and American traditions, aiming at collective grace.

Production: Fondation Royaumont I Les Couleurs du Son, a recipient of the Aide à la structuration from DRAC Ile-de-France.

Production In Vivo.

ENGLISH VERSION : Some childhood dreams take a long, long time to come true. So did the dream of creating music with partners who have become close, intimate friends. Trailblazer Rabih Abou-Khalil’s nursed this old dream for years, and finally made it true with this quartet. The modal specificities of oud rock our expectations, improvisation-wise. The very codes of jazz music are to be played with – yet never roughly questioned. And, in the geographical interplay that he favors, we can witness the care with which the oud master has crafted his musical narrative. All the titles are very evocative, and they jog our collective memory, as well as a poetic sense of foreignness, full of humour, tailored to suit to each individual listener. With The Flood And The Date Of The Fish, Rabih Abou-Khalil crafts, with minimalistic human means, an intimist and spellbindingly evocative musical jewel.

Production In Vivo.
