Multi-instrumentiste prodige tout entier dévoué à la cause des musiques traditionnelles afro-américaines, Jerron Paxton creuse le sillon d’un blues hors d’âge, accueillant aussi la musique cajun ou le ragtime. Après deux disques de reprises et un album de chansons originales, Recorded Music For Your Entertainement en 2015, voici le New-Yorkais accueilli par la prestigieuse maison Smithsonian Folkways. Publié à l’automne 2024, Things Done Changed est la démonstration éblouissante du talent brut d’un conteur hors-pair maniant le banjo avec maestria mais aussi le violon, la guitare ou l’harmonica. Avec ses chansons, ce sont la lettre et l’esprit d’une tradition musicale vieille d’un siècle qui s’invitent sur scène.
ENGLISH VERSION : Jerron Paxton is an astonishingly talented multi-instrumentalist devoted to the cause of traditional acoustic African-American music. He is thoroughly at home moanin’ and jivin’ the blues, and he’s also familiar with Louisiana French fiddle and ragtime tunes. After two CDs where he covered standards and one album of original songs, Recorded Music For Your Entertainment, in 2015, the Los Angeles-born Paxton signed a contract with Smithsonian Folkways. Issued in the fall of 2024, Things Done Changed is a dazzling demonstration of songster maestria. Guitar, banjo, fiddle, and harmonica will get your face smiling, your feet stomping, and your hands clapping. Onstage, Paxton revives a centuries-old musical tradition that has retained all of its vitality.

Mississippi, début des années 70 : Annie, Edward et R.C. Brown sont encore adolescents quand ils commencent à écumer les églises, festivals et tremplins avec leur mélange de gospel et de soul. Un unique album – publié en 1975 sous le nom de Staples Jr. Singers – témoigne de la ferveur que dégage cette soul électrique et engagée, à une époque où les fantômes de la ségrégation planent encore sur la communauté afro-américaine du Sud des États-Unis. La réédition de When Do We Get Paid en 2022 ouvre la voie à une reconnaissance internationale du groupe, qui n’a jamais cessé de chanter, et au très beau Searching, inespéré deuxième album paru en 2024. Aujourd’hui rejoints par leurs (petits) enfants, les frères et la sœur ont gardé intacte la flamme d’une musique populaire chaleureuse et authentique.
ENGLISH VERSION : Mississippi, in the early 1970s: Annie, Edward, and R.C. Brown were just teenagers when they started touring around to churches and festivals with their mixture of gospel and soul. A single album, released in 1975 under the name Staples Jr. Singers, attests to the fire and fervor generated by this electrifying music. At the time, the spectres of segregation still loomed over the African-American communities in the southern United States. A reissue of the song When Do We Get Paid in 2022 opened the road to international recognition of a group that never stopped singing together. At last, they recorded the beautiful second album Searching, in 2024. Today, their children and grandchildren have joined them onstage. The whole family keeps the flame burning, dishing out friendly, authentic popular music.
