HAN BUHRS - texts, vocals | TATIANA KOLEVA - vibraphone, percussions | LUC EX - bass | THIJS ELZINGA - guitar

Led by Han Buhrs’s rough, Dutch vocals, Rubatong celebrates what one might call a form of contemporary blues on the rocks. The four musicians don’t care too much for labels, and throw in the mix improvised explosions, punk salvos and throaty asides which would infuriate a street pedlars’ guild. Rubatong? They mix’n’match, but they’re quite at ease with their influences, they borrow and forge freely, and as a band they dish out a little bit of tough love to the picky listeners as well as to their hard-core fans. Hans Buhrs is grumbler – albeit a classy one – and he creates humanistic “almost-blues”, bolstered by the ever so happy performances of his partners – full of of dark Dirty lil’ kisses and heavy-metallish boleros. Resounding and incantatory music. Universal music.

Rubatong - No Next Day

ERIK MARCHAND - vocals | RODOLPHE BURGER - electric guitars, vocals | MEHDI HADDAB - electric oud | PAULINE WILLERVAL - gadulka, vocals | JULIEN PERRAUDEAU - bass | ARNAUD DIETERLEN - drums

Better than a Premier League Clasico! A Britany v. Alsace game, refereed by the greatest German genius of all times. On the field, Rodolphe Burger dribbles round Erik Marchand. Blowing the whistle: a Johann Sebastian Bach. Better than Maradona summoning the Hand of God in Mexico in 1986. Burger, a rebel master who has worked with James “Blood” Ulmer and John Tchicai, who played the first-leg match in Before Bach, vol. 1 in 2005. Erik Marchand, brilliant renovator of the Breton Kan Ha Diskan, joins him for the second part of this project, with the utmost conviction that traditional music was indeed universal even before the moderation of the Baroque genius. Here, they bring together blues, Albanian pentatonic music, rock n’roll, Turkey, and Brittany. No limits, no borders, but right in the middle of the penalty area.

The concert is co-produced by Le Roudour – St Martin de Champs (29) and the Petit Echo de la Mode – Châtelaudren (22) and is sponsored by SPEDIDAM, ADAMI, CNM, SVB, the administrative board of Britany, and DRAC Bretagne. It is produced by Dernière Bande/Naïade Productions.

Album release: Feb. 2021, “Glück Auf! – Before Bach, chapter 2 (dernière bande/PIAS).
