Will Guthrie - drums, percussions

He’s often seen with the creme de la creme, the most productive and relentless free music performers (Roscoe Mitchell, Jean-Luc Guionnet, Julien Desprez, Erwan Keravec, Keith Rowe..), but it’s probably during solo performances that Will Guthrie’s rhythmical genius is best perceived. The percussionist drummer settled in Paris in the early 2000s. He presents himself as a man who was raised on sounds which were collected all around the world, and what he makes you hear is simply what he’s metabolized. Roots can be visible, but modernity is constantly morphing. Listening to and especially seeing Will Guthrie perform solo will bring you close to a fainting spell or a catharsis, it’s almost a moment of truth — in any case: a revelation.

A legend; a symbol. Inextricably linked for the occasion. A mythical band celebrating its fiftieth anniversary in Paris, where it was almost born. And young voices who came to represent Black Culture, such as Camae Dennis (aka Moor Mother), joining the band — a world of its own, which has always been able to renew its spells. We’re on the bleeding edge! she says. Good — just a quick recap, then. The Art Ensemble was created in 1967 in Chicago, the birthplace of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM) and the African-American Civil Rights Movements. Exiled in Paris in 1969, the combo then became the Art Ensemble of Chicago and recorded seminal — and rowdy — sessions such as A Jackson In Your House for BYG, then a fledgling label. Back in the United States, in 1971, Lester Bowie, Joseph Jarman, Roscoe Mitchell and Malachi Favors, its unruly founding fathers, went on exploring the basics of a committed, creative, and popular Great Black Music. 50 years later, Famoudou Don Moye and Roscoe Mitchell have invited 15 other musicians to unite ancient and future times, and celebrate a collective vision which has by no means lost its edge. Mixing elements borrowed from rap and lyrical music to its own historic creations, the Art Ensemble adds yet another shot of intranquility to its legend.
