PAUL WACRENIER HEALING ORCHESTRA "FREE JAZZ FOR THE PEOPLE!"CREATIVE RESIDENCE
Guest : Sylvain Kassap - clarinet, bass clarinet
Let’s admit it, slogans, gimmicks and other activist riffs are a dime a dozen these days. They can sound urgent, rowdy. Or, like Free Jazz for the People!, they can humbly strive to bring people together. Free Jazz is also the new repertoire of the Healing Orchestra led by Paul Wacrenier. Boosting the basic principles of Free Jazz, the pianist lets the genre equally fray with the most romantic ballads or the noisiest instrumental masses. A feeling of freedom, happiness to play — and, by extension, to live — run through the symbiotic ensemble Wacrenier created with his crew, featuring for this occasion Sylvain Kassap, another trailblazing troublemaker, whose sound is a federative force too. As it brings together enraged riffs, universal anthems and hypnotic swing, the Healing will move you powerfully, while its handsome devils share their divinely brilliant take on popular music.
January, 23-January, 30: a 6-day residence at the Theatre de Cachan, during which this new repertoire will be created. With guest clarinettist and composer Sylvain Kassap.
ANDREW CYRILLE / WILLIAM PARKER / ENRICO RAVA "Tribute to Cecil Taylor"EXCLUSIVE
As far as Cecil Taylor is concerned, this trio has to be reckoned with. For more than one reason. Each member explored his own musical limits in his company, and the direction each has taken since can be seen as stemming from the new ways of performing created by Cecil Perceval Taylor, an icon of free US jazz, the patron saint of diagonal pianism. Andrew Cyrille, a prolix drummer, has thus forged his own musical innovations during his time with the Cecil Taylor Unit. William Parker, a terrific composer, shone within the same Unit and the Italian trumpet-player Enrico Rava, who performed more than once with Taylor, has been able to bring together tradition and avant-garde. This tribute to founding precepts, by a key trio, is a golden opportunity to see how friction can trigger electric storms. A larger-than-life performance.
