"RISE UP !!" PRALINE GAY-PARA AND CHRISTIANE ILDEVERT // CONCERT/MEETING. In partnership with co-op bookstore Envie de Lire

PRALINE GAY-PARA - story-teller | CHRISTIANE ILDEVERT - double-bass

A local bookstore. A bookshop at the foot of social housing that has been raising the curtain for almost twenty years on a collection of 18,000 books, hundreds of rare and out of print books, thematic collections whose quality is second to none to many specialized bookshops and a "blue as an orange" corner for budding readers that occupies a quarter of their walls. Second-hand bins, tables and chairs, coffee and press neglected by the regular distributors.

African-American culture has a rich oral tradition, storyteller Praline Gay-Para has inherited, in particular. "Chatting" is her specialism. It was also the work of anthropologist Zora Neale Hurston, who collected words, nonsense, fictions and stories in the southern United States at the beginning of the 20thcentury. Praline makes no secret of it: she walks in Hurston's footsteps. Especially since African-American folk music, from Negro Spirituals to jazz and blues, has also been a subtly coded defensive mechanism against mental representations resulting from the misdeeds of slavery. "Rise Up!!!” pays tribute to this tradition, through a storytelling concert. Because speech is essential, necessary and liberating, as is Christiane Ildevert's improvised music that accompanies the story.

It is under the roof of the Hangar, and not under a porch, that this ritual chat will take place on Wednesday evening, February the 13th, as part of the partnership between Sons d'hiver festival and Envie de lire bookshop.
