Le jazz, ça a toujours été un peu une affaire de voix. Voix douces, moelleuses, criardes, déchirantes, hésitantes, affirmées, puissantes, innocentes, revendicatives. Et de ce jeu d’adjectifs polyphoniques, il y a le folksong, le territoire de Suzanne. On s’y joue des limites de la bouche humaine et des instruments. C’est le connu qui danse avec l’inconnu. Du jazz de chambre, du folk nuancé de mélancolie, de secrets sonores dits tout bas, d’une infinité des timbres et d’improvisation libre. Écouter ce trio parisien, c’est aussi se plonger dans un vieil album photo de famille. On feuillette ses souvenirs, on sourit. On respire le papier usé, tourné avec délicatesse, avec un dernier regard pour ce qui vient de passer devant nos yeux, puis on avance.
ENGLISH VERSION : To a great extent, jazz has always been a vocal art. Voices set many a mood: suave, soothing, and mellow; angry or exuberant shouts; emotive heartbreakers and hesitaters; powerful, innocent, or militant tones. Suzanne is named in homage to folksinger Leonard Cohen, and it takes us down to a place near the river of chamber music, where it boards the vessel of improvisation, paddling into the unknown, into the frontier where the mouth is an instrument. Strummed strings, whispered sound secrets, an infinity of timbres. Listening to this trio is like paging through an old family photo album. The memories, like the paper, are slightly faded. We enjoy this journey into the past; then, lifting our eyes, we continue forward, into the future.

Parmi nos Giants of Jazz à nous, fondateurs d’une utopie musicale et totale dans la filiation frenchy libertaire du jazz US des sixties, il y a Louis Sclavis. Clarinettiste-chercheur, musicien fondu dans les cadences du monde, et créateur de nouveaux mondes sonores. Les Cadences du Monde, c’est aussi ceci : une harmonie prise à la jointure des textures des musiques de chambre européennes et de toutes les autres musiques du globe. On se doute, ces chemins ne s’ouvrent pas en solitaire. Des pays de l’ex-Yougoslavie jusqu’au Pakistan en passant par la Turquie, l’Iran et l’Afghanistan, cet hommage résume parfaitement l’idée qu’à tout folklore, il vaut mieux une cadence, une musique nouvelle et kaléidoscopique. Encore vive, depuis l’utopie des années soixante-dix.
ENGLISH VERSION : Louis Sclavis is one of our homegrown giants of jazz, the founder of a total musical utopia, channeling the French libertarian twist on American jazz of the sixties. A clarinetist and a seeker, he merges with the “cadences du monde” (the title of the album he released in 2021) to create new sound worlds. Les Cadences du Monde draws its harmony from the river of bliss where the streams of European chamber music meet all the other musics of the world. You may well imagine that such trails are not blazed alone. From the Balkans to Pakistan, with stops in Turkey, Iran, and Afghanistan, this homage is a perfect abstract. Every folk tradition can be adorned with a cadenza, a new and kaleidoscopic departure. The utopia of the 70s is thriving.
