Sorcier des synthés passé par Chicago avant de s’installer à Los Angeles, Jeremiah Chiu travaille en solo, en duo avec la violoniste Marta Sofia Honer et en groupe avec SML. En ouverture de cette soirée, le musicien revisite les pièces hypnotiques et rêveuses de l’album In Electric Time, enregistré en deux jours lors d’une immersion dans la vaste collection du Vintage Synthesizer Museum de Highland Park, et publié par les têtes chercheuses du label International Anthem en 2023.

EN // Synthesist Jeremiah Chiu came Los Angeles via Chicago, and is known for his solo work as well as duos with violinist Marta Sofia Honer, and as part of the SML quintet. Opening this concert, Chiu will revisit the hypnotic, dreamy pieces from his album In Electric Time. It was recorded over a two-day immersion in the vast collection of the Vintage Synthesizer Museum in Highland Park, CA, and issued in 2023 by the elevated consciousness of the label International Anthem.

Bassiste de SML et pour des musiciens de la scène californienne aussi différents que Jeff Parker, Aimee Mann ou Phoebe Bridgers, Anna Butterss a publié deux albums solo hybrides – Activities en 2022 et Mighty Vertebrate en 2024 – qui évoquent la densité et la versatilité du post-rock. Riches en effets et percussions, tout en contrastes, souvent ombrageux mais toujours doux et fluides, ses morceaux ont le charme entêtant d’un jazz progressif et progressiste.

EN // Butterss lays down the bass line for SML and California-scene musicians as varied as Jeff Parker, Aimee Mann, and Phoebe Bridgers. Both of her hybrid solo album releases – Activities, in 2022, and Mighty Vertebrate, in 2024 – evoke the lushness and versatility of post-rock. Her pieces, a cornucopia of effects, percussions, and contrast, flow gently from the storm of emotion to calm, with all of the heady charm of jazz that is progressive in every way.

Avec son casting all-star, le quintet SML s’est imposé – en seulement deux albums – comme le moteur à explosion de cette nouvelle scène angelène des musiques improvisées. Sur Small Medium Large (2024) comme How You Been (2025), on reconnaît le son très singulier du saxophoniste Josh Johnson – producteur acclamé pour son travail avec Meshell Ndegeocello – pris dans le maelström de morceaux denses et élancés. En équilibre entre rigueur et liberté, SML joue à la fois sur des cadences métronomiques et sur le groove le plus puissant, le tout passé à la moulinette des synthétiseurs modulaires.
