Après avoir sillonné le monde en trio avec son frère Bijan et son père Djamchid, grand maître de percussion iranien, Keyvan Chemirani poursuit aujourd’hui un chemin très personnel, jalonné de collaborations qui sont comme autant de ponts entre les musiques orientales et occidentales. Le percussionniste français embrasse ainsi les instruments (zar, santour, saz) et éléments mélodiques de la modalité indo-orientale – au fil de compositions oscillant entre le festif et le méditatif – qu’il associe aux timbres d’instruments chambristes occidentaux, ici un violon et un piano. Son nouvel album, joliment titré Tales of New Ancient Rhythms, déploie une musique à la fois riche et précise, ouverte aux improvisations et aux territoires du jazz.

EN // Keyvan Chemirami and his brother Bijan used to tour the world as part of a trio formed by his father Djamchid, the great master of Iranian percussion. Now, Keyvan pursues a more personal musical path, studded with collaborations that operate as bridges between Oriental and Western music. Born in France, Keyvan has embraced the instruments of Persia (zar, santur, saz), along with Indo-Oriental melodic elements. His compositions, often featuring Western chamber instruments – in this case, the violin and piano – oscillate between meditative and festive. Keyvan’s latest album, evocatively entitled Tales of New Ancient Rhythms, presents music that is both rich and precise, open to improvisation and jazz territories.

Initiée voilà plus de dix ans, la collaboration entre Kayhan Kalhor – figure incontournable des musiques persanes – et le Trio Rembrandt a donné naissance à un album somptueux en 2019 (It’s Still Autumn) et s’actualise aujourd’hui sur scène, où les musiciens poursuivent un dialogue hors du commun entre les traditions musicales et les époques. Fidèle à un goût des métissages exprimé au fil des décennies avec le Silk Road Ensemble ou encore son trio Ghazal, le maître du kamânche (vièle à pique rustique iranienne) embarque ici dans une odyssée avec l’aventureux trio hollandais et ses instruments anciens (piano-forte, violone et percussions hybrides) pour une musique passe-murailles riche et enveloppante.

EN // The collaboration between Kayhan Kalhor – the monument of Persian music – and the Trio Rembrandt has lasted for over ten years. In 2019, they gave birth to a splendid album (It’s Still Autumn). Today, onstage, they are updating the eclectic tapestry they weave, combining musical traditions and eras. Kalhor has expressed his affinity for hybrid sounds over the decades in his work with groups like the Silk Road Ensemble and his own trio Ghazal. Here, the maestro of the kamâncheh (a bowed string instrument played in Iran) embarks on an odyssey with the adventurous Dutch trio and its period instruments (fortepiano, violone, and hybrid percussions) towards a rapturous and enveloping universal music.
