Marc Ribot est un phare, éclairant tous azimuts. Marc Ribot ne choisit pas. No Way! Son insolence est pourtant restée fidèle au jazz : interprète d’Albert Ayler, artificier des Lounge Lizards, de l’Electric Masada et du Wadada Leo Smith’s Silver Orchestra, sideman chez Jack McDuff, Don Byron, Medeski Martin & Wood. Son New Jazz trio prolonge les pistes du trio créé avec Chad Taylor et le bassiste Henry Grimes. Empathique, expérimental et volubile. Dérivé en quartet avec l’invitation de James Brandon Lewis, autre artisan d’hymnes universels, autre fidèle du festival Sons d’hiver.

ENGLISH VERSION : 70 years young!! Part two of Marc Ribot’s 70th birthday celebration. Ribot was one of the inventors of the downtown Manhattan scene; he was the sideman supporting Tom Waits’s wildest vocal flights of fancy; and he also featured on recordings by Caetano Veloso, Tricky, and Madeleine Peyroux. Ribot’s brilliant light shines far and wide. He moves fluidly through musical genres, refusing to choose just one. Nevertheless, jazz is the one that usually accommodates his insolence. He has performed Albert Ayler compositions, created fireworks with the Lounge Lizards, Electric Masada, and Wadada Leo Smith’s Silver Orchestra, and backed up Jack McDuff, Don Byron, and Medeski Martin & Wood. Ribot’s New Jazz trio journeys farther along trails blazed with Chad Taylor and bassist Henry Grimes. It is experimental, empathetic, and eloquent. Embracing James Brandon Lewis, it becomes a quartet with James Brandon Lewis, another crafter of universal odes; another alum of the Sons d’hiver festival.

Marc Ribot a 70 ans, troisième et dernière party. Ce trio a du chien. Aussi commode que ces cabots de faïence au regard pas commode posés en bordure d’escaliers de zones pavillonnaires. Faussement malcommode pourtant, le Ceramic Dog. Guitare diagonale, batterie suffisamment binaire pour mieux nous surprendre, et basse faste et furieuse. Récemment, l’arsenal du power jazz trio, a rafraîchi le teint de son free-punk lettré et revendicatif. Leur aboiements noise d’avant-garde mixent rock’n’roll, funk, disco, flamenco, délires psychédéliques et, cerise flashy sur le gâteau, des harmonies pop. Le chien de faïence a, encore et toujours, les crocs plantés dans ses poèmes érectiles et longs chants cabossés avec classe. Pas mal du tout comme birthday cake.
ENGLISH VERSION : This will be Sons d’hiver’s third and last 70th birthday party for Marc Ribot. His Ceramic Dog will hound your ears. It is about as cozy as one of those potbellied terra cotta canines the Aztecs used to make. Xolotl’s task was to guide the souls of the dead through the dangers of the underworld. The guitar careens on the edge of chaos; the drums are binary enough to keep us on our toes; and the bass is fast and furious. This power jazz trio arsenal has given new fire to Ribot’s politico-literary free-punk explorations. Their avant-garde barkings blend rock’n’roll, funk, disco, flamenco, psychedelia and – the catchy icing on the cake – pop harmonies. The ceramic dog is eternally chasing its erectile tail of a poem, long songs hammered out with class. A welcome change in the way of birthday cake.
